BALD MOUNTAIN PRESERVE

(RLHT) Do this one! Even if it’s a bit of a challenge for you, it will be well worth it! We promise!! The reward at the top is well worth every single huff and puff. They’ll be a little “fanny pushing” of the younger members of the family (4/5 years old?) and Gramma may need a hand on a few spots, but other than that, it is predominately a walk in the woods with about fifteen minutes of climbing/hiking. Fortunately, there’s plenty of view spots in these fifteen minutes, so you can “just be enjoying the view” (while you’re hoping your heart truly won’t beat out of your chest). At the top, courtesy of a 30’ fire tower – that is a MUST climb (we will not entertain any comments of fear of heights) – is a very secure platform from which to marvel at the spectacular 360-degree breathtaking view of the numerous lakes and mountains of the region. You are truly on top of the world! Pick a good day, of course, although a little cloudy actually adds beauty. Just don’t go on a heavy overcast day and not think it’s much. It..is..the..best…! Also, unlike other trails in the region where you’re not likely to see anyone, anticipate a little “traffic” on this very popular trail.

Directions: Drive through Oquossoc village, continue south on Route 4/Carry Road 1.1 miles, taking a left onto Bald Mtn Road. Travel approximately .8 miles (shortly after Bald Mountain Camps), until you see the Bald Mountain Trail sign and parking area up on the left.
