Exploring the Rangeley Lakes Area
With six large lakes to enjoy and a collection of surrounding mountains working as the scenic backdrop, guests to Rangeley Lake will enjoy an abundance of opportunity in the way of outdoor adventure. Be sure to rent a kayak, canoe or boat while you’re here and enjoy time on the water in style. These lakes are also home to a large population of Bald Eagles and Loons—exciting for those who like to combine the activities of hiking and bird spotting.
Rangeley has more than just bald eagles and loons to offer as far as wildlife viewing, although they’re both pretty cool. The western part of Maine, in the lake region, is well known for being home to more moose than any other state except Alaska. There are an estimated 76,000 moose in the state, so if you plan things right, you can see a few while you’re here. Try the area known as “Moose Alley,” the stretch of Route 16 between Rangeley and Stratton, or Route 17 just south of Height of the Land. The best time to see these magnificent mammals is dusk and dawn, rain or shine. Try your luck on your own or book a guided “moose hunt” adventure to up your odds.
No visit to the Rangeley area would be complete without a trip to Height of the Land. It’s one of the most picturesque spots in the state, if not the country, with breathtaking views of the surrounding forests and lakes, including Mooselookmeguntic and Richardson Lakes. You can hike along a portion of the Appalachian Trail while you’re here too and learn about the area’s history and wildlife on the “Conservation Walk.” Get out and enjoy a hike or stay in your car to enjoy the view as you drive along the Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway.
If there’s snow on the ground, head to Saddleback Mountain for downhill skiing, snowboarding, snow biking, snowmobiling, ice skating and more. Strap on snowshoes or skis and head out cross-country along the trails or make your own way. And if there’s no snow, take a hike to one of the area’s lovely waterfalls. Small Falls, Cross Canyon, Angel Falls, and Cascade Stream Gorge Trail are just a few hikes to try.
For a scenic tours of the area, take a guided kayak trip or boat cruise. A sunset or foliage cruise is sure to please. You can also enjoy the scenery from above with a tour of the Rangeley Lakes Region by seaplane!
