Get in the Mood
It’s time to get the kids started on making plenty of Mexican-themed decorations so you can party in style. Let them make plenty of Mexican flags, paper sombreros, colorful tissue paper flowers, giant cacti, colorful banners made of donkeys, tacos and flags, or papel picado banners (there are plenty of patterns on Pinterest and YouTube). And don’t forget the paper bag luminaries to set out on the deck while you keep the party going after the sun sets.
Exercise First
Take an early morning hike to work up an appetite. The short hike to Small Falls or Angel Falls for a view of the cascading waterfall is a good way to start the day, or take a stroll along the lake. Book one of our lake-front cabins and you’ll be able to take a quick dip in the water or a quiet kayak ride before hitting the buffet tables.
Cinco De Mayo Maine Mexican Tasting Tables
While everyone is busy crafting their hearts out – and why not set them out on the deck – you can start setting up all the tasting tables. Set them up around your spacious rental and out on the deck. What could be better than having a little tequila shot or two while watching the loons glide around the lake on a Maine Cinco De Mayo evening?
Think about drink tasting tables, which depending on your group’s tastes, can include the usual suspects like a variety of tequilas, margaritas, (frozen and not) piña coladas, and Mexican beer, along with a new drinks to try like Michelados, (a spicy Mexican Bloody Mary) mojitos, sangria, palomas, Tequila Sunrises, and colorful Jarritos Mexican soda for the kids. Don’t forget to have plenty of fun garnishes like strawberries, jalapenos, and limes, and a bowl of kosher salt to rim those glasses.
And now for the main event. Set up tables filled with all the fixings and let everyone make their own. Have a self-serve burrito bowl bar, taco bar, tostada bar, fajita bar, and maybe a salsa bar with homemade mild mango salsa, medium-hot cactus salsa, and a salsa roja—spicy hot! Don’t forget the sides, with bowls of refried beans, black beans, Mexican salad, Mexican red rice, and guacamole, queso, and other nacho toppings for chips. Then add in some soon to be favorites like fried avocado and elotes asados (grilled street corn covered with a creamy cheese sauce), and you’re set.
For the dessert table, make plenty of bunuelos, churros, and sopapillas, with fun toppings like Nutella, chocolate, cinnamon-sugar, and honey. Bake plain sugar cookies in fun shapes like cactus, sombreros and let the kids decorate them with colorful icing. If you run out of time for all that baking, it’s ok to buy plain cupcakes or cookies while you’re in Rangeley.
While there aren’t any Mexican restaurants in Rangeley (at this time), there are several close by in Kingfield and Farmington. You can always order your Mexican feast ahead of time, pick it up and then enjoy your meal at your leisure in your Maine Cinco De Mayo lake-front rental.
After the Tacos and Tequila
Work off all those tacos, guacamole and tequila shots with a conga line. Or, have a Mexican dance off. Stream some how-to videos, then get everyone started with the Jarabe Tapitio (Mexican Hat Dance) or other traditional Mexican dances.
When everyone is danced out and things are winding down, head out to your rental’s deck to watch the stars reflecting off the lake and listen to the loons calling out. Rangeley is far enough from city lights for great star gazing, even on your deck. Hand out the hot chocolate and churros, then settle back to wait for a shooting star.
